When a customer contacted us about their child’s Yoto Player not turning on, the initial diagnosis seemed straightforward: buy a replacement charger and job done. However, as with many electronics repairs, what appears simple on the surface can reveal a more complex problem underneath.

The Challenge with Yoto Player Chargers

The Yoto Player uses a wireless charging system, which is brilliant for kids’ devices as there are no cables to trip over or ports to damage. However, when the charging base fails, sourcing a replacement becomes problematic. At the time of this repair, genuine Yoto wireless chargers were unavailable to purchase online, leaving parents with an expensive paperweight and disappointed children.

Rather than tell our customer they were out of luck, we decided to investigate whether the charging base could be repaired.

Diagnosing the Wireless Charger Issue

The customer’s Yoto Player showed no signs of life when placed on its charging base. We first tested the device with a known working charger to rule out a fault with the player itself. Once confirmed the unit was fine, attention turned to the wireless charging base.

Opening the charger revealed the culprit: broken wires inside the unit. Over time, the constant movement of cables and general wear had caused internal connections to fail. This is a common issue with electronic devices that experience regular handling, particularly in family homes where items get moved about frequently.

The Repair Process

With the fault identified, we carefully resoldered the broken connections within the wireless charging base. This required precision work to ensure the joints were solid and wouldn’t fail again in the near future. After reassembly, we thoroughly tested the charger with the customer’s Yoto Player to confirm power delivery was stable and the device charged correctly.

Why Repair Rather Than Replace?

Electronic waste is a growing concern, and when quality children’s devices like the Yoto Player fail due to a simple component issue, repair makes both environmental and economic sense. This particular fix cost the customer significantly less than purchasing a new Yoto Player whilst the charging base remained unavailable separately.

More importantly, the child got their beloved media player back, complete with all their story cards and playlists intact.

Common Issues with Kids’ Electronics

Children’s electronic devices take considerable punishment. Wireless chargers, in particular, suffer from:

  • Cables being pulled or twisted repeatedly
  • Devices being placed on charge roughly rather than gently
  • Accidental drops or knocks to the charging base
  • General wear from daily use

Many of these issues result in repairable faults rather than terminal failure. Before disposing of or replacing children’s electronics, it’s worth having them assessed by a repair specialist.

Getting Your Electronics Repaired

If your child’s Yoto Player, tablet, gaming device, or other electronics have stopped working, the issue may be more fixable than you think. Internal wire breaks, charging port damage, and similar faults are often economically repairable, extending the life of devices that still have plenty to offer.

We’ve successfully repaired numerous children’s electronics that parents assumed were beyond saving. From gaming handhelds to educational devices, many common faults have straightforward solutions when you have the right tools and expertise.
