If your PS5 is running louder than usual, shutting down unexpectedly, or displaying overheating warnings, you’re not alone. We recently worked on another PlayStation 5 with severe overheating issues, and the culprit was all too familiar: degraded liquid metal and compromised heatsinks.
The Problem: Tarnished Heatsinks and Debris Build-Up
When we opened up this particular console, the extent of the damage was immediately apparent. The heatsink showed excessive tarnishing—a clear sign that the liquid metal thermal interface material had deteriorated over time. This degradation significantly reduces heat transfer efficiency, causing the APU to run much hotter than intended.
To make matters worse, one of the heatsinks was clogged with fluff and dust. Even the best thermal compound in the world can’t compensate for a heatsink that’s struggling to dissipate heat due to debris accumulation.
Our Repair Process
Thorough Liquid Metal Removal
The first step in any liquid metal repair is complete removal of the old material. Liquid metal can spread beyond its intended area and, when degraded, loses its effectiveness. We carefully cleaned every trace from both the APU chip and the heatsink surface.
Deep Cleaning the Heatsink and APU
Once the liquid metal was removed, we meticulously cleaned both the heatsink and the chip itself. The tarnishing required special attention to ensure we were working with clean, optimal surfaces. We also cleared all the accumulated fluff and debris from the heatsink fins to restore proper airflow.
Professional Liquid Metal Reapplication
With pristine surfaces prepared, we applied fresh liquid metal using the correct technique and quantity. Too much can cause problems; too little won’t provide adequate thermal transfer. Getting this balance right is crucial for long-term performance.
The Results
After reassembly and testing, the PS5 console ran significantly cooler and quieter. The fan no longer had to work overtime to compensate for poor heat dissipation, and the system maintained stable temperatures even under heavy gaming loads.
Prevention Tips
Whilst liquid metal degradation is somewhat inevitable over time, you can extend your PS5’s lifespan by:
- Keeping your console in a well-ventilated area
- Regularly dusting around (but not inside) the console
- Avoiding enclosed spaces like cabinets
- Ensuring proper clearance around all vents
