XBox Joypad LED Mod Fitting

Below, we will demonstrate how to modify your XBox Joypad Ports to allow the use of an LED, which will then shine through the port hole. This leaves your XBox console looking fantastic in the dark!

To complete this mod, you will require the following:

- Hyper Bright LED (or your personal choice)

- 22 ohm Resistor

- Tools to open XBox (see our XBox tool kit on the website)

- Soldering Iron and Solder

- Wire cutters

This tutorial assumes you are already capable and have the knowledge to dismantle your XBox console. See our other tutorials for guides on how to strip your XBox down.

Step 1.

To carry out this mod, we need a 22 ohm resistor and Hyper-Bright LED.

Step 2.

Snip the positive anode leg (the longer one of the 2) of the LED to around 5mm. Now do the same to one leg of the resistor.

Step 3.

Now, solder the cut-down legs on the LED and resistor together and then trim the other leg of the resistor to around 5mm also.

Step 4.

Now you need to cut the remaining leg of the LED to the same size as the resistor, so they are matching lengths.

Step 5.

With the LED/Resistor combo prepared, its now time to remove the metal casing from the joypad port so we can connect the LED in place. To remove the casing, you need to heat the solder joints on the cover whilst at the same time, prising the cover outwards to release it. It can be fiddly, so be careful with that hot iron!

Step 6.

With the casing removed, we now need to identify the black and red wires, onto which we will be connecting the LED/Resistor combo.

Step 7.

You can now see the LED/Resistor combo in place, connected correctly. The resistor leg connects to the red (+) wire and the LED leg connects to the black (-) wire.

Step 8.

With the LED in place, we now need to bend the LED forwards, but slightly off to one side too. This allows the LED to shine, but not directly into your eyes, from the front of the console. I will repeat again... bend the LED off centre, so it is not pointing directly out of the port. This is to save your eyes!

Also make sure that when the cover is replaced, it will not be touching the LED and shorting it out.

Step 9.

With the LED installed, we can now replace the cover by soldering the points back together. This silver cover not only protects the joypad port, but also reflects the LED light, which gives the great effect you see when the mod is completed!
